"FBI needs hackers" -- Ok, now what?

Breaking non-news! Vnunet reports that the FBI needs hackers to help it understand and combat cybercrime. I've heard this a million times before, and not just from Blackhat last week.

So my question is what, specifically, should we be doing? I'm sure I'm not the only security pro willing to lend a hand, but how should we each go about doing it? There are plenty of us who have solid technical chops, the ability to communicate with non-technical audiences and the strong desire to use our powers for good. Has anyone successfully stepped up, and can you share your thoughts on how to get started?
